President Donald Trump said the U.S. shouldn't slow its AI development, arguing that "whoever wins with AI wins" and that maintaining America's lead over China matters more than added regulation, even as Microsoft Corp.
(NASDAQ:MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella and other industry leaders push for more careful, deliberate progress toward superintelligence.
'Whoever Wins With AI Wins' When asked whether the AI industry should slow down or face more regulation, Trump told reporters during a trip to his Doonbeg golf course in Ireland on Sunday that the U.S. remains the "most sophisticated country in the world" in AI and needs to keep that edge over China.
"You have a lot of negative forces that are bringing it up that shouldn't be bringing it up," Trump said, adding, "they're bringing up things that won't happen," while acknowledging guardrails could still be added.
Nadella Says Speed Must Come With Guardrails In a post on X on Sunday, Nadella said any pursuit of superintelligence must be "grounded in the core principle that if the AI we build is not helping humanity and under human control, it's not worth pursuing." He said this requires "a frontier ecosystem in which both closed and open-source models can thrive," arguing that oversight "cannot be controlled by a handful of entities" and instead needs "broad representation across the ecosystem, countries, and fields, including academia." He added that Microsoft welcomes "the research, focus, and deliberate pacing needed to get alignment right as the design goal," and is publishing a "Code of Conduct" for its own AI models for public consultation Monday.
