Sweden will wake on Monday to another electoral cliffhanger, with Magdalena Andersson’s opposition narrowly ahead despite setbacks for both her Social Democrats and the far-right Sweden Democrats.
As polls opened on Sunday, Benny Andersson, the pianist from legendary Swedish band ABBA, played a slightly rewritten version of one of its greatest hits, Mamma Mia, at Social Democratic headquarters in Stockholm.
“Magdalena – here I go again,” Andersson and the hopeful Social Democrats sang in unison.
The election did indeed prove a reprise – although not quite the one the Social Democrats had hoped for. As in 2022, when fewer than 50,000 votes separated the two sides, Sunday’s contest went down to the wire. Around 28,000 votes separate the two blocs, SVT estimates.
