The Australian market lost nearly 3 per cent last week as the oil price broke above $US100 a barrel and the yield on the US 10-year note edged towards 5 per cent, while the S&P 500 lost 1.2 per cent.As fighting intensified across the Middle East last week, with the Yemen-based Houthis saying they had targeted Saudi Arabian energy facilities and the United States launching strikes against Iranian oil tankers, crude traded at about $US105 a barrel on the weekend.Investors hope that three key central bank decisions – from the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England on Thursday, and the Bank of Japan on Friday – will cool global bond markets by reassuring markets that policymakers remain serious about fighting inflation and, in turn, potentially boost equity markets.The Fed meeting will be the week’s main event after higher-than-expected core inflation data released on Friday stoked investor bets that chairman Kevin Warsh and his colleagues will raise the benchmark rate, with money markets now putting an 87 per cent probability on a rise.A September rate increase could well be followed by another in December, as Warsh used a major speech at Jackson Hole last month to tout his inflation-fighting credentials and is now expected to follow through.Read more here.Fetching latest articles
