The former conservative prime minister is the 'big elephant in the room'
ATHENS – The return of conservative heavyweight Antonis Samaras to politics with an as-yet-unnamed party could deny Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis a majority in looming elections and revive a decades-old family feud.
The history between the Samaras and the Mitsotakis dynasty runs deep, stretching back more than three decades and marked by rivalry and betrayal.
At the Thessaloniki International Fair last weekend, Samaras was the “big elephant in the room”, as one official from New Democracy, the ruling conservative party, put it.
“Samaras has the know-how to damage the party,” Mitsotakis later acknowledged.
