Pakistan upset all the odds after a horribly difficult tour by batting throughout the third day at Edgbaston and kept the final Test alive thanks to an extraordinary ninth-wicket stand between debutant Razaullah and the experienced Mohammad Abbas.Having failed to reach 200 in their five previous Test innings on tour, Pakistan more than doubled their previous best score in the series by finally resisting England’s seamers before then taking the attack to England in spectacular fashion.No one more than the hugely exciting 21-year-old who was one of the seven players flown to England for this final Test after the Pakistan Cricket Board made sweeping and controversial changes.Razaullah, who dismissed Joe Root with his fourth delivery in Test cricket and went on to take four wickets in the England first innings, came in at No9 with Pakistan on 318-8, still four runs behind England, but launched a breath-taking attack.He made his attacking intentions clear from the start and, well supported by Abbas, smashed nine huge sixes in his 81 off 63 balls in a partnership of 121 that was ended on the stroke of 7pm on the third day when he became the last wicket to fall stumped going for a 10th six.That, for context, is more sixes than Geoff Boycott hit in his 108-Test career and the joint record for a debutant shared with New Zealand’s Tim Southee in Napier in 2008, also against England. Abbas, meanwhile, hit two sixes of his own before falling just before the close for his highest Test score of 42.Azan Awais (59) and Shan Masood (95) initially led their recovery — they had been 0-2 at the end of Ollie Robinson’s first over of the innings on Thursday afternoon — with a partnership of 125.
