Britain’s Ministry of Defence just pulled back the curtain on something the defense world has been speculating about for months. The UK is now openly operating roughly 1,000 Starshield terminals for military communications, making it the first country outside the United States to publicly confirm adoption of SpaceX’s classified satellite network.
The disclosure, which came on September 10, also revealed that the MoD is running an additional 500 Starlink terminals alongside the Starshield hardware. Total UK spending on SpaceX satellite services since July 2022 sits at nearly $40 million, split between approximately £13 million ($17.6 million) on Starshield terminals and airtime and £16.5 million on Starlink.
Two networks, very different jobs
If you’ve heard of Starlink, think of Starshield as its paranoid older sibling. Both ride on the same foundational satellite infrastructure, but Starshield layers on enhanced encryption, dedicated service terms tailored for military operations, and prioritized network access that regular Starlink customers don’t get.
Since early 2026, the UK has been routing operational military data traffic through Starshield exclusively. Starlink, meanwhile, got demoted to non-operational applications, things like personnel welfare services.
