Gruffalo Granny has been hailed as ‘children’s book of the year’ as it flies off the shelves following its release this week.
Waterstones said the third instalment of the series – written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler – racked up more sales on day one than the pair’s last book Jonty Gentoo did in its first week.
And rival High Street chain The Works said it has ordered in extra stock to keep up with demand.
The release of Gruffalo Granny on Thursday came more than 20 years after the last Gruffalo book – The Gruffalo’s Child – was published in 2004.
That followed the release of the original story The Gruffalo in 1999.
