The New Mexico Supreme Court said Stephen Aarons submitted a brief containing invented witness statements and wholly fabricated witnesses in a murder case

Stephen Aarons, a private attorney based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, was fined $5,000 and held in contempt by the state's supreme court after submitting an appellate brief containing testimony and witnesses fabricated by ChatGPT, the court said Wednesday, according to Reuters.
According to the court, the brief Aarons submitted contained "false testimony from wholly fabricated witnesses," a lapse the justices attributed to his failure to check what the AI had produced before filing it. The justices further found that he "demonstrated a lack of remorse and a lack of concern for his client," and announced that the matter would be sent to an attorney disciplinary board.
