Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held talks Wednesday with French President Emmanuel Macron during a visit to Paris for the International Space Summit, with discussions focusing on energy infrastructure, regional developments and bilateral cooperation.
The meeting took place before a dinner hosted by Macron at the Elysee Palace. The two leaders discussed the next steps for implementing the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection project following an agreement for investment group Meridiam to become the majority shareholder in Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), the company originally designated to develop the project.
The Paris meeting comes at a critical moment on several fronts, particularly regarding the resumption of surveys linked to the Great Sea Interconnector project. Beyond political and business frictions within Cyprus, the project faces Turkish objections concerning licensing authority in the area between the Greek islands and Cyprus. Meridiam’s involvement also brings France directly into the project, which has received €657 million in funding from the European Commission.
