Penn Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania’s medical school, has received a $50 million gift to establish a new center and fund to accelerate research on treatments for cancer, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and other serious illnesses, a spokesperson for Penn Medicine confirmed Thursday.

The gift comes from Philadelphia native Stanley C. Middleman, founder and CEO of the mortgage lender Freedom Mortgage, whose philanthropic arm focuses on strengthening the communities it serves. This marks his first gift to Penn; previously he donated undisclosed sums to his alma mater, Temple University, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Thanks to his gift, a recently expanded building on the medical campus will now be known as the Middleman Center at Penn Medicine. Among other things, the refurbished 15-story building will feature a wet lab, a hub for autoimmunity research and a specialized biosafety lab for the study of infectious disease specimens.
