The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has condemned the killing and targeting of councillor candidates ahead of the November 4 local government elections, calling for stronger action against political violence and criminal gangs in the province.
Provincial task team co-ordinator James Nxumalo said the resurgence of political intolerance and targeted killings was a threat to the democratic process.
“We vehemently condemn the senseless killings and targeted assassinations of councillor candidates in some parts of the province, which represent a direct assault on the constitutional rights of our citizens and the integrity of our democratic process,” said James in a media briefing yesterday.
The party’s comments come after three IFP candidates were killed in separate incidents in KwaZulu-Natal this month.
