While I’d love to tell you that I’m the sort of person who can leave the house with nothing more than my phone, cardholder and a lipstick, the reality is rather different. By the time I’ve added my laptop, water bottle, sunglasses, umbrella, various beauty essentials and my gym kit, I need a bag with serious capacity.Thankfully, this autumn, fashion seems to have decided that bigger really is better. From Dua Lipa’s £6,000 giant Chanel raffia tote, which she was spotted carrying through JFK Airport in New York last month, to Lululemon’s aptly named ‘Big-Ass Bag’, which could quite literally fit a kitchen sink and has gone viral on TikTok, the ‘ludicrously capacious bag’, to borrow Tom Wambsgans’ brilliant description in Succession, is back and bigger than ever.And while I’m not quite ready to carry something the size of a small suitcase around town, I am very much on board with a roomy handbag that can fit my laptop, water bottle and everything else I insist on taking with me. The trick, of course, is finding one that’s big without looking bulky – and, ideally, doesn’t cost the earth.I’ve been keeping an eye out for the best new-season styles, from investment-worthy leather bags to high-street finds that look far more expensive than their price tags suggest. Here are the 11 I’ve got my eye on for autumn.At the very top of my wish list is Polène’s new Shuldo. Derived from the English word ‘shoulder’, it’s designed to be worn over the shoulder and is one of the French leather brand’s roomiest styles yet. Crucially, it fits a 13-inch laptop – always my first test when it comes to a genuinely useful big bag – alongside all those other daily essentials.It comes with a zipped interior pocket and is available in seven shades, including Black, Ebony, Black Cherry, Brown, Mist, Desert and Linden. It’s hard to pick a favourite, but Black Cherry has my vote for autumn. It looks gorgeous with black, brown and blue, making it surprisingly versatile despite being a little more interesting than your standard black handbag.Of course, you don’t need to spend £640 to get the look. This ASOS DESIGN tote is proof that the high street is having its own moment with oversized bags – and at £32, it’s a particularly tempting way to dip your toe into the trend.The mock-croc finish, twin handles and buckle detail give it a distinctly designer feel, while the structured shape stops it from looking like an oversized shopping bag. It can comfortably fit a 13-inch laptop, too, and the two handles make it easy to carry. Honestly, for £32, I’m impressed.Dune London’s Deliberate bag already has a surprisingly impressive celebrity fan club, with Bella Hadid, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Katie Holmes all having been spotted carrying the style. Now there’s a new, roomier addition to the family: the Deliberate Hold.Essentially, it’s the chicest gym bag I can imagine, with enough space for your everyday essentials and the ability to expand when you need even more room. It’s made from Dune’s signature handwoven material, which gives it that relaxed, tactile feel, but it’s the versatility that really appeals to me. Commuting, gym, overnight stay – this is one big bag that could genuinely earn its place in my wardrobe.If you like your oversized bags with a little texture, Katie Loxton’s Nova Hand Woven Large Shoulder Bag is well worth a look. The Nova Hand Woven collection is a bestseller for the British vegan leather brand, and for autumn, the large design has arrived in new colourways including Fossil Grey, Teal and my favourite, Crimson.I love a deep red handbag for autumn, and this one has the added bonus of being genuinely practical: it can fit a 13-inch laptop, so there’s no need to sacrifice function for fashion. At £84.99, it’s also a much easier purchase to justify than some of the more investment-worthy bags on my list.When I’m spending a little more on a handbag, I want it to be something I can see myself carrying for years – and DeMellier’s new Brooklyn ticks that box for me. The London-designed brand’s latest release has an elegant east-west silhouette and comes in both a larger and midi size, with the larger comfortably fitting a 13-inch laptop.There are four shades – Black, Bordeaux, Mocha and Hazel – and both grained leather and suede iterations. Personally, I’d go for the black grained leather with gold hardware. It’s classic, understated and the sort of combination that won’t date. That said, the Bordeaux with silver hardware is a very close second.For something a little more fun, Next has come up trumps with this burgundy-red tote. It comes in Burgundy Red and Black, with the Tan Brown version already sold out, and is exactly the sort of arm candy I can imagine giving an otherwise simple autumn outfit a lift.It’s super spacious, with room for a 13-inch laptop and all your everyday essentials, and comes with a shoulder strap. Personally, though, I think I’d carry it by hand and let the bag charms do the talking. At £46, it’s a relatively low-risk way to experiment with the oversized bag trend – and the burgundy shade feels particularly right for autumn.Strathberry’s Kite Hobo Maxi is a lesson in how to make a big bag feel elegant. The Scottish brand’s generously proportioned hobo now comes in burgundy, alongside ten other shades, and has plenty of space for everything you could possibly need, including a 13-inch laptop.There’s an adjustable shoulder strap and removable interior zipped pouch, plus the brand’s signature music bar. I particularly like that the shape is relaxed rather than overly structured – it makes the generous proportions feel intentional rather than cumbersome.I’m always impressed when a high-street handbag manages to look considerably more expensive than it actually is, and this John Lewis number is a case in point. Available in Green and Chocolate, it combines soft suede with a leather base and has a beautifully curved top.The eyelet detailing and gold hardware are the sort of little details that make a bag feel considered, while the interior zip pocket keeps things practical. It can fit a 13-inch laptop with room to spare, too, so you could easily make this your everyday work bag. At £159, I think it strikes a very appealing balance between quality, style and price.The anticipated rebrand of Parisian favourite Sézane has brought with it a host of new silhouettes across its categories, including leather goods, and the Maxi Solal is firmly on my radar.It’s a leather bucket bag designed to be worn over the shoulder and is roomy enough for all your daily essentials, including a 13-inch laptop. There’s also a removable pouch, which is always useful when you’re dealing with a bag this size.It comes in Black, Smooth Brown and Coffee, but it’s the latter that has made its way onto my wish list. The suede iteration is particularly gorgeous and feels very right for autumn. Just do as I say, not as I do, and remember to Scotchgard it before you start using it.There are big bags, and then there are bags that look like they could swallow your entire life – and Reiss’s Ramona falls firmly into the latter category.Made from plush suede and cut to an oversized silhouette, it has leather side panels and shoulder straps that wrap around the base, finished with gold-tone hardware. But really, it was the grey colour that sold me. It’s soft, sophisticated and the sort of neutral that works particularly well with an autumn wardrobe of jeans, knits and tailoring.And finally, the one that may have surprised me most: Mango’s Leather Shopper Bag. Made from leather and finished with a charm and mirror, it looks far more premium than its £229.99 price tag – dare I say, it could even pass for a certain designer handbag, which is precisely how it ended up on my list.It has a single shoulder strap, multiple interior pockets and enough room for a 13-inch laptop, so it’s ticking all my practical boxes, too. It comes in Black and Medium Brown. The latter is fulfilling all my current boho-autumn dreams, but the black would undoubtedly get more wear. Decisions, decisions…Perhaps, then, the ‘ludicrously capacious bag’ isn’t quite so ludicrous after all. When it looks this good and means I can fit my entire life inside it, I’m very much sold.
