Greece has recorded a historic peak of 324 domestic West Nile virus infections this year, surpassing the previous record of 317 cases in 2018. Over the past week, authorities logged 34 new infections and six additional deaths, bringing the total death toll to 30.
The National Public Health Organization reported 217 cases involving central nervous system complications, with 68 hospitalized and 32 in intensive care. Attica accounts for 56.8% of exposures. Because under 1% of infected individuals develop severe disease, the total infection number is likely far higher.
Despite widespread European mosquito activity, Greek officials believe the outbreak’s peak has passed. The virus transmits primarily through common mosquito bites, posing higher risks to adults over 50 and immunocompromised individuals. Health authorities urge continued personal protective measures.
