OpinionSeptember 11, 2026 — 11:14amIt’s been a full-on week – I judged a Rabbits in Fancy Dress contest at the Adelaide Royal Show and saw a fella shot out of a cannon – and yet there’s still been energy to mull over one question: what will actually become of Harry and Meghan now?The Sussexes must have been feeling their reverse Harriverderci had gone pretty well. No assassins hiding in Cotswolds hedges. No gossipy leaks from neighbours about beige couches and beige linen and beige playground equipment being delivered to the new Casa Sussex. The Sussexes are back but not back in.Getty ImagesMeghan even posted a snap to showcase the luxe earthmother vibe she’s hoping to rock as a country duchess. In a giant hat, feet bare, she’s crouched over a dog and a trug – dead set – with a few despondent veggies. I can’t stop laughing. Lady, lots of people have pets and grow food.But. Even as Harry was signing some wall at a podcast studio in London apropos of nothing and looking rapt at a quasi-princeing gig came the blow from one of his father’s henchmen.A letter of “guidance” written by Lord Benyon on the King’s behalf and sent far and wide insists the Sussexes are private citizens. Translation: guys, in case you think being around the corner again means you can sneak back onto the home team, we’re cutting you off right there. It’s up there with QE2’s “recollections may vary” as a masterclass in Putting You Back in Your Box.Many of us know Harry and Meghan aren’t back in the UK just for the polo and banter. They need money and a rebadge. They need jobs. And the only thing they have to trade on and make that happen is Harry’s family name and past working-royal status. Otherwise, nobody cares.Charles – no doubt guided by his seething right-hand man William – got in front of all that. He’s legit snookered the pair, with exquisite sledgehammer politeness. And the Sussexes’ response to having it writ large that the roles they gave up are staying given up? Less clinical. Less poised. Yeah, they quibbled.Sources report Harry and Meghan were “surprised” not to have been given a proper heads-up so they could respond. That in itself is wacky. Charles’ decision was very much “no correspondence shall be entered into”.Harry took “particular issue” with the “private citizen” nomenclature, The Telegraph reported, after an apparent briefing from the Sussex camp: the duke and duchess, he said, really do prefer “public figures”.That checks out. Imagine if you were counting on Sandringham walkabouts and curtseys and sycophants to kickstart your UK commercial life. Instead the King lumps you in with, say, day traders and plumbers and swim teachers.Charities and organisations, anyone who might have thought there was still lustre in getting Harry to talk about emotionally removed dads or Meghan to dish on potluck supper recipes will perhaps be reconsidering.Who will want to roll out the actual and metaphorical red carpet when the King is watching with interest? Already Uganda has picked its side, pulling out of the Invictus Games, Harry’s favourite legacy project from royal days.Charles is a man “we deeply revere”, said Uganda’s military chief, vowing to quash “that Harry-Meghan nonsense ... I support the monarch. Period.” Ouch. The public can already see glimmers of a glamorous Wales court.William and Kate dropping off a towering George at Eton – England to the core. This is what the people want, not a duke and duchess making their own brave way like Dick Whittington’s cat.Despite everything, people will always love Harry because he’s Diana’s son. That doesn’t translate to making bank but he’s in a comfier place than his wife.Prince Harry and Meghan in Melbourne in April.APWhat becomes of Meghan now? Running the school trivia night? A memoir? Just last week that would have meant exile until the end of time from the in-laws, but post-statement, that probably doesn’t matter. The headlines around a role in The Gentlemen have fizzled and they smacked anyway of a PR stunt from her camp to whip up relevance. You know, “if Guy Ritchie thinks she’s cool she must be cool” stuff. A Great British Bake Off Christmas special? EastEnders? Hold on – The Celebrity Traitors.Kate Halfpenny is an author and the founder of Bad Mother Media. The Opinion newsletter is a weekly wrap of views that will challenge, champion and inform your own. Haz and Meg’s reverse Harriverderci is not quite going to plan
Just when the Sussexes were all set to quasi-royal around, a letter from the King has put the kibosh on their rebrand. Now what?
