OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed Thursday that he spoke to U.S. President Donald Trump in the past few days, saying that despite the bitter collapse of Canada-U.S. trade talks, he can work with Trump on ways to ease global pressures on energy and food security that are the consequence of Russia’s war on Ukraine and the U.S. war in Iran.
“We can compartmentalize across this,” said Carney, deflecting a question about why he believes Trump has been so angry at Canada since the prime minister called a halt to trade negotiations nearly two weeks ago in the face of what he called “fundamental” disagreement over tariffs and American demands that threatened Canadian trade and cultural sovereignty.
