In the last three years at least 64 current or former police officers have been sent straight to prison for offences including serious dishonesty, physical and sexual violence and abuse of position of power, according to a new report.
But there remains no automatic duty to review all the cases that they may have had a hand in investigating.
Now Winston Trew – who was framed by a policeman in the 1970s and spent 47 years clearing his name – is fronting a campaign to have this changed.
The Ministry of Justice told us: “Miscarriages of justice have a devastating impact on individual’s lives which is why there are clear routes for anyone who believes they have suffered from one to challenge their conviction by appealing through the courts.”
