Seven years is a long time to wait for anything. For AS Roma fans, the wait for Champions League football ended on September 10, 2026, and Bryan Cristante made sure it started with three points.
Cristante’s right-footed goal in the 39th minute, set up by Donyell Malen, proved to be the only difference in a tight, tactical contest at Chobani Stadyumu in Istanbul. Roma beat Fenerbahce 1-0 in the league phase opener.
A match defined by margins
Roma’s expected goals figure came in at just 0.25, barely edging Fenerbahce’s 0.22. Roma controlled possession at 54% to Fenerbahce’s 46%.
Fenerbahce, despite fielding an attack that included Mason Greenwood, Vedat Muriqi, and Kerem Akturkoglu, couldn’t generate enough quality to break down Roma’s defensive shape. The Turkish side were also without Matteo Guendouzi, who was suspended for the match, depriving them of a key midfield presence.
