Google just brought its Gemini AI assistant to Windows desktops as a standalone application, giving users a conversational AI tool that lives on top of whatever they’re already doing. The app launched globally on September 10 for Windows 10 and 11, and it can be summoned with a simple Alt + Space keyboard shortcut.
What the Gemini desktop app actually does
The core pitch is straightforward: press Alt + Space, and a Gemini window appears over whatever application you’re currently using. No need to open a browser tab, no need to navigate to a separate site.
Beyond the conversational interface, the app includes a dedicated workspace designed for multi-step tasks. Think of it as a scratch pad where you can work through more complex requests that require back-and-forth with the AI, rather than one-shot questions.
Integration with Google’s own ecosystem is baked in. The app connects to Gmail and Google Drive, which means users can pull information from their emails or documents directly into a Gemini conversation.
