Kano State is seeking to deepen collaboration with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) to expand its tax base and improve compliance, as the government intensifies efforts to mobilise more revenue from the state’s extensive commercial and business activities.
The push formed part of discussions when a delegation of the NRS, led by Wande Akinfelu, Group Director, Government Business, paid a courtesy visit to the Kano State Government House ahead of a town hall meeting with taxpayers and other stakeholders.
The engagement is significant for Kano, one of northern Nigeria’s major commercial centres, where a large informal economy, extensive trading networks and thousands of businesses provide considerable room for expanding the revenue base.
Rather than relying primarily on increased tax demands on existing taxpayers, the engagement is expected to focus attention on bringing more eligible individuals and businesses into the tax net while improving voluntary compliance among those already captured.
Akinfelu, who represented the NRS Chairman, stressed the need for stronger cooperation between revenue authorities, government institutions and taxpayers to build an efficient and sustainable revenue system.
