The Premier League’s festive fixture list has landed, and it looks a lot different than what fans have come to expect. Sky Sports will broadcast 29 live matches between Boxing Day and January 7, but the headline number obscures the real story: Boxing Day itself, long a crown jewel of the English football calendar, has been reduced to a single game.
Manchester United will host Newcastle United at 8 PM on December 26, 2025. That’s it. One match on a day that traditionally features a full slate of top-flight football.
Why the schedule looks so different
The shrinking Boxing Day is not a random scheduling quirk. It’s a direct consequence of UEFA’s expanded European competition calendar, which has eaten into the domestic schedule. More Champions League and Europa League matchdays mean fewer windows for Premier League fixtures, and the holiday period has absorbed much of that compression.
The league is also leaning into player welfare as a justification for the changes. No matches will be scheduled within 60 hours of one another during the festive stretch, giving squads more recovery time during a period historically associated with injuries and fatigue.
