Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold suffered a hip injury on the team’s first series Wednesday night and was quickly ruled out of the game. If you watched him limp to the locker room slowly and grimly during the broadcast, you may have believed his season was finished.Andrew Destin of The Athletic offered an encouraging postgame update, however. Head coach Mike Macdonald said the team received “great news” from initial imaging and no fracture was detected. Additional testing is anticipated and we don’t yet have a clear recovery timeline, but it appears Darnold has avoided a nightmare scenario.Drew Lock was competent in relief of Darnold, completing 16 of 22 attempts for 187 yards and one score (on which Jaxon Smith-Njigba handled the heavy lifting). Lock was sacked just once and he didn’t turn the ball over. He was tormented by the play clock all night, routinely allowing it to expire, but he was otherwise effective. Seattle’s next two games are on the road at Arizona and Washington, both of which figure to be low degree-of-difficulty matchups. Lock is now very much on the superflex radar as a short-term option. If you are at all worried about Smith-Njigba in the weeks ahead, maybe this fantasy stuff just isn’t for you. He belongs to a rare category of receiver that requires only minimally capable QB play, as he demonstrated on Wednesday when he caught 8 of 11 targets for 122 yards. He and Lock should continue to cook, given the quality of upcoming opponents — the Cardinals, Commanders and Chargers are next.Seattle’s backfield is currently a messy committee in which the most talented runner (Jadarian Price) is limited to early-down work. Even if the team chooses to lean more heavily on its ground game, those touches won’t flow to a single player. For now, think of Price as a flex with serious potential. As for the Patriots, they left Seattle with both a brutal loss and, suddenly, an un-fillable hole at wide receiver. A.J. Brown suffered what is believed to be a high-ankle sprain. X-rays reportedly did not detect a fracture. As The Athletic’s Chad Graff notes, it would not be a huge surprise if Brown was sent to short-term IR, which would mean at least a four-game absence.Drake Maye’s outlook will certainly take a hit for however long Brown is out of the mix. Newly acquired wide receiver Romeo Doubs would theoretically benefit from additional targets, but he lacks Brown’s explosiveness and he’s coming off a zero-catch disaster game. Hunter Henry, once again, becomes a playable-if-TD-dependent tight end. Unfortunately, after he was dealt to Houston, Kayshon Boutte ain’t walking through that door.
