Sam Darnold's injury (Getty Images)Seattle's Super Bowl banner had barely been unveiled at Lumen Field when the night took a sharp, uncomfortable turn. On the fifth play of the 2026 NFL season, quarterback Sam Darnold took a sack from former Seahawk Dre'Mont Jones on third-and-6 and came up visibly limping. He left the field without assistance but was soon inside the blue medical tent, and moments later was escorted to the locker room. The Seahawks listed him as questionable to return with a hip injury. Drew Lock took over. Just like that, the mood at Lumen Field changed entirely. How did Sam Darnold get injured in the Seahawks' Week 1 game?Seattle's opening drive had started with real promise. A 13-yard run from Jadarian Price, followed by a 13-yard completion to Jaxon Smith-Njigba, had the crowd buzzing. Then a George Holani run set up a second-and-one, before a penalty and an incompletion pushed it to third-and-6. That's when things unraveled. It was a coverage sack. Darnold pulled the ball down and tried to extend the play, but Dre'Mont Jones got to him and dropped him hard. Darnold came up limping. What made it sting even more was who delivered the hit. Jones had spent three seasons in Seattle before signing elsewhere and returned Wednesday night wearing Patriots colors.NBC sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung described exactly what she saw: "You could see Sam flanked there by the team's head trainer and their head orthopedic surgeon. When Sam first came off the field, he was waving the training staff off. You could see him digging his right hand into his right hip, trying to keep it loose. By the time the trainer talked him into going into the blue tent for evaluation, Sam started to limp. You could see him as he left the field. He's now in the X-ray room."Darnold completed one of his two passes for 13 yards before exiting the game. Hardly the start anyone in Seattle had in mind. What does Sam Darnold's injury mean for the Seahawks' championship defense? This is where the real concern sits. Darnold is not just a quarterback. He is the spine of everything Seattle built last season. He recorded 323 completions for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions during the 2025 regular season, and guided the Seahawks all the way to a Super Bowl title over these same Patriots. Losing him, even temporarily, reshuffles everything.Drew Lock, who takes over in his absence, appeared in five games for Seattle last year but barely contributed. His 2025 stat line reads: two completions from three attempts for 15 yards, and six rushing attempts for negative six yards. That is the man now running the offense for the defending champions. It is also worth noting that Seattle is trying to become just the tenth team in NFL history to win back-to-back Super Bowls. Only two teams this century have managed it: the 2003-04 Patriots and the 2022-23 Chiefs. Darnold's health is central to whether that conversation stays realistic.Last season, Darnold dealt with a left oblique issue in the lead-up to the NFC Divisional Round against the 49ers but was still healthy enough to play through it. This hip situation is different. X-rays were ordered. The locker room visit happened mid-game. There is no clear timeline yet.For now, Seattle is playing on and hoping for good news. The answers, though, will come later.
