The Trump administration reportedly plans to distribute $500 rebate checks to up to one million individuals who were allegedly overcharged under Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The administration intends to send direct-deposit payments to individuals in 30 states before the Nov. 3 midterm election, Axios reported on Wednesday.
The rebate funds are derived from a $500 million fund of surplus fees paid by Affordable Care Act recipients who were overcharged by insurance companies during the Biden administration, the report noted. An official told the publication, “That money was over-collected and just sitting there” in government accounts.
Officials clarified that the refunds are available to Obamacare enrollees who do not receive premium assistance through the program. States with a significant number of recipients eligible for refunds include Alaska, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, Delaware, Texas, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio.
White House did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comments.
