TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dedollarization could be a hot topic at the upcoming BRICS Summit, according to Andrea Abdul Rahman Azzqy, an international relations observer from Budi Luhur University. The dedollarization concerns the efforts by foreign governments and market participants to reduce the use of the US dollar."Indeed, dedollarization is highly likely to be one of the topics discussed," he told ANTARA in Jakarta, Thursday, September 10.This statement was made ahead of the BRICS Summit, which will be held in New Delhi, India, on September 12-13, 2026.BRICS, a group of developing countries that plays a major role in the global economy, consists of core members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. New members of the group include Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia. The buzz about dedollarization at the BRICS Summit emerged after the summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, last year discussed alternative payment systems using local currencies (local currency settlement) and the development of an independent cross-border payment system.Meanwhile, Andrea added that to strengthen the bargaining position of developing countries economically and politically, Indonesia is encouraged to bolster market and investment confidence by ensuring investment security, streamlined bureaucratic processes, stable logistics chains, and easy and transparent taxation."This is something Indonesia has not yet been able to achieve. This is especially true under President Prabowo's administration, which frequently intervenes in the market, faces legal instability, and a lack of skilled human resources," he said.Read: Does BRICS Have a Clear Purpose?Click here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News
