Transnet has reported a return to profit, with rail volumes increasing by 4.9% during the 2025/26 financial year as the state-owned logistics company works to improve freight operations
State-owned logistics company Transnet has returned to profit after reporting a R4.6 billion gain for the financial year ended March 2026, compared with a R1.9 billion loss a year earlier.
The company announced its annual financial results on Thursday, saying the improved performance was supported by higher rail and pipeline volumes, tariff increases and efforts to improve operational efficiency.
The results come as Transnet works to recover from years of declining freight volumes, infrastructure constraints and operational disruptions that have affected South Africa’s economy and exporters.
The company is also implementing reforms aimed at opening the rail network to private operators and attracting private investment into the country’s ports.
