The Islamic Republic of Iran has appealed to the United Nations to intervene and prevent the enforcement of new U.S. sanctions targeting Iran’s commercial aviation sector.
The request was submitted in an official letter from Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative in New York to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the rotating President of the UN Security Council.
The Iranian mission characterized the designation of 27 domestic airlines as “economic terrorism,” “collective punishment,” and a “crime against humanity,” asserting that the measures violate the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law.
The letter calls on the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council President to urge member states to reject and refrain from implementing the new U.S. sanctions.
Iran further warned that penalizing its aviation industry could lead to severe humanitarian consequences for Iranian civilians. U.S. officials have not yet issued a public response to the letter.
