Abbas Mousavi, Chief of Protocol and Acting Political Deputy of Masoud Pezeshkian’s office, announced that the United States has imposed new conditions on the Islamic Republic delegation’s attendance at the United Nations General Assembly, stating: “Tehran is currently reviewing the principle of attendance and the delegation level for New York.”
Speaking to state news agency IRNA on Monday, August 31, Mousavi stated that the US, as host of the UN Headquarters, “has recently imposed conditions” that are “by no means acceptable or legal, creating a new precedent.” He did not disclose the specifics of these conditions.
The deputy chief of staff added: “We are finalizing our decision on whether to participate, and if so, at what level and with how many attendees.”
In recent months, the United States has introduced restrictions on entry for officials and individuals affiliated with the Islamic Republic. These limitations previously affected the Iranian delegation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Last year, reports similarly surfaced indicating that visa applications had been denied for several individuals put forward by Pezeshkian’s office, including members of his family, who were slated to accompany the UN delegation.
