Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero has defended the R192 million cost of rehabilitating Lilian Ngoyi Street, saying the bulk of the work and the money has gone into rebuilding ageing underground tunnels and replacing critical water and electricity infrastructure.
City of Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero has defended the R192 million price tag for the rehabilitation of Lilian Ngoyi Street, formerly known as Bree Street, saying much of the cost is linked to extensive underground infrastructure work that is not visible from the surface.
Morero made the comments on Wednesday during a walkabout at the construction site with Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) officials and other city officials.
The project, which was triggered by a methane gas explosion on July 19, 2023, was originally scheduled for completion last month.
The explosion killed one person and injured several others.
