A skull was found on gravesite in the cemetery this week.
A human skull, a stabbed black fowl and a burnt red candle are among disturbing discoveries at Mountain Rise Cemetery, while reported damage to the Wall of Remembrance has raised further safety concerns.
The shocking discovery was made by grave-keepers at the Pietermaritzburg cemetery in the last seven days.
They also reported having found vagrants making beds with pillows and blankets on tombstones and unmarked graves.
Allan Werner of KJC Memorial Caretakers said the escalating incidents had started last year, but had become much more sinister in the last week.
