The repeated desecration of the Sobukwe family gravesite, an act the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) has condemned as “beastly and barbaric”, has ignited a broader conversation about the sanctity of burial grounds.
Community members alerted the Sobukwe family and local political party leaders on July 31 to fresh vandalism at the family gravesite (Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, Veronica Sobukwe, and the ashes of their son Dinilesizwe Tebello Sobukwe).
Beyond the physical damage lies a deep cultural violation, as experts explain that in African society, graves are far more than final resting places.
UKZN cultural expert and professor of African Languages, Professor Sihawukele Ngubane, said the sanctity of graves in African society is linked to the Ubuntu Philosophy that emphasises human dignity.
