There are few red carpets in the world as cinematic as the one at the Venice Film Festival. Before the flashes begin at the Palazzo del Cinema, the stars make their entrance by water, gliding across the lagoon in those unmistakable wooden water taxis. It is a ritual that has produced some of the festival’s most memorable images, from the Hollywood glamour of Paul Newman and Gina Lollobrigida to more recent arrivals such as Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, whose appearance together in Venice became an instant paparazzi moment. This year, George and Amal Clooney continued the tradition, arriving by boat ahead of the festival’s opening night.
