NEW YORK — Anthony Volpe’s transition to second base has mostly flown under the radar. The former New York Yankees starting shortstop, who won a Gold Glove as a rookie three years ago, has been away from the big-league spotlight, playing at Triple A after getting demoted in early August.But the Yankees have liked what they have seen from the 25-year-old as he’s taken to the new position, according to Ryan Hunt, the team’s infield, outfield and base-running coordinator.“He’s excelled,” Hunt told The Athletic before a 6-1 win over the Colorado Rockies at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.“Everything that you’d expect from him in terms of being a professional, in terms of his work, in terms of his talent — I mean, we know what the skill set is, right? He doesn’t get enough credit for the work he’s put in to capitalize and maximize his own ability for what he’s done at this point in his career.”The renewed focus on Volpe comes after the Yankees said Wednesday that second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. suffered a sprained right thumb sliding into second base in Tuesday night’s win over the Rockies. The club plans to shut down Chisholm from baseball activities for up to the next 10 days, and it’s unclear whether he will return before the regular season ends Sept. 27.Volpe will rejoin the Yankees on Thursday, manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday night. The Yankees plan to put Chisholm on the injured list that day.
