NEW YORK — More than a 120-mile drive away in sleepy Moosic, Pa., Anthony Volpe figured he wouldn’t set foot in Yankee Stadium again this season.When the New York Yankees demoted him in favor of hot-shot rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. after the trade deadline, Volpe expected to play the rest of his games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, trading in the bright lights of the Bronx for the pine trees that dot the area behind the outfield wall at PNC Park.“I thought I was never going to make it back up here,” Volpe said Thursday night.Except he did return, and in a major way.After getting called up suddenly to replace injured second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., Volpe crushed a grand slam and collected another two hits in a 10-3 romp over the Colorado Rockies. Chisholm suffered a sprained right thumb Wednesday and might not return before the end of the regular season.For the first time in his big-league career, Volpe — a natural shortstop — played second base, though he didn’t get any chances in the field.

His hands seemed a touch higher and his back leg a bit sturdier as he unleashed what appeared to be a shorter swing.It helped him go 3-for-4. He hit an RBI single on a soft line drive in a full count in his first at-bat and grounded out his second time up. In his third at-bat, he ripped a liner for an infield single. Then, in his fourth time at the plate, he crushed a 104 mph line drive over the right-field wall for a seventh-inning grand slam, giving the Yankees a 10-2 lead.
