After years of rumors and speculation, the iPhone Duo is real. Apple’s first-ever foldable phone aims to combine the best features of both the iPhone and iPad, all while providing a smooth, intuitive software experience that manages to stand out from the many Android foldables we’ve tested over the years. Apple calls it the biggest iPhone breakthrough since the original, and after trying one out, it’s hard not to feel like it could go down as one of the best iPhones yet.
That said, is a folding iPhone worth a whopping $1,999 at minimum? And can it compete with both the best smartphones and best tablets? Here’s what I think after some early hands-on time ahead of the phone’s Oct. 16 preorder date.

The iPhone Duo has a familiar foldable design that brings the recent Galaxy Z Fold 8 to mind — it’s a traditional-looking iPhone when folded up, and effectively a smaller iPad Mini once you open it. But even as someone who’s tested lots of foldables, I was still struck by Apple’s unique spin on things.
