Apple's new iPhone Duo has been confirmed.19:46, 09 Sep 2026Updated 20:04, 09 Sep 2026Apple has just unveiled its most expensive smartphone ever, and it finally comes with a foldable screen‌The new £1,999 iPhone Duo marks one of the biggest changes to the US firm's iconic devices in years.‌Revealed at Apple’s HQ in Cupertino, California, the Duo takes the firm firmly into the foldable phone era – several years after Android rivals first started selling bendable devices.‌Roughly the size of a passport, it features a 5.4-inch outer display that opens like a book to reveal a huge 7.6-inch iPad-style screen. That giant inner display looks perfect for watching films, browsing the web, playing games and juggling multiple apps when you're out and about. Then simply snap it shut and the whole thing folds down into a much more pocket-friendly device.Apple might be late to the foldable party, but the company clearly believes the time is right.‌Samsung has already spent years refining its Galaxy Z Fold range, with the company reporting strong demand for its latest models and sales up 30% compared with previous launches. Now Apple is hoping it can take foldables firmly into the mainstream.‌As well as those two screens, the iPhone Duo packs Apple’s super-fast A20 Pro processor, a dual-lens camera, long battery life and fast charging. It also supports Apple Pencil, allowing users to write notes, draw and scribble directly onto the larger display.Durability has long been one of the biggest worries surrounding foldable phones, but Apple says it has gone to great lengths to make sure the Duo won't break under pressure.‌The phone features a tough hinge, aerospace-grade aluminium and special support ribs designed to add stiffness and strength. And Apple hasn’t ignored the software either.Apps can automatically adapt depending on which screen you're using, making the Duo feel less like a conventional phone that happens to fold and more like two devices rolled into one.‌“When we designed iPhone Duo, we wanted to create the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” new Apple CEO John Ternus said.“With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.”‌So, is it any good?Despite the scrum of journalists and army of influencers battling for access, I managed to get my hands on the iPhone Duo during the launch – and there’s no doubt this is a phone that turns heads. The huge inner screen is the star of the show. It gives you a seriously impressive canvas for watching movies, browsing, gaming and multitasking, while closing the phone makes it far easier to carry around.‌The software also appears to have been carefully designed around the foldable format, rather than simply taking the standard iPhone experience and stretching it across a bigger screen. But then there’s that price. At £1,999, the iPhone Duo is firmly in luxury territory and costs far more than many of the Android foldables already available.‌That could prove to be Apple's biggest challenge. But Apple has a habit of taking technology that has been around for years and turning it into a must-have product. The iPhone itself did exactly that.Article continues belowAnd if Apple can pull off the same trick with foldables, don’t be surprised if the £1,999 Duo becomes the phone everyone suddenly wants.
