…Businesses scale down; farming hit by illegal levies
Northern Nigeria is facing mounting economic pressure as insecurity, multiple taxation and rising operating costs squeeze businesses, threaten farm production and deepen concerns over food security.
The Central Bank of Nigeria’s July Business Expectations Survey identified high and multiple taxation as the biggest constraint on businesses, scoring 70.8, followed by insecurity at 69.7 and high interest rates at 66.3.
The pressures have also spread to agriculture, with armed groups reportedly imposing illegal levies on farmers before they can access or harvest their farms.
