The Port of Mombasa is emerging as an increasingly important maritime hub for global trade and security, with major US and UK naval vessels making port calls in Kenya within weeks of each other.
The latest arrival was the USS Ross, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer of the US Navy, which docked in Mombasa on September 5 for a scheduled port visit.
The US Navy said the visit supports logistics, resupply and ship readiness while strengthening maritime-security cooperation between Washington and Nairobi.
The visit followed the August 12 arrival of two British vessels, HMS Dragon, a Type 45 air-defence destroyer, and RFA Lyme Bay, a Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel being adapted to support autonomous mine-hunting operations.
The ships stopped in Mombasa for routine maintenance and resupply after training, as part of a wider British deployment that positioned Dragon and Lyme Bay to support a potential multinational, defensive mission to restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
