OTTAWA — The federal government is dropping a controversial proposal that could have made it easier to green-light projects that jeopardize the survival of at-risk species, the Star has learned, following backlash from environmentalists who worried the change threatened the existence of orcas off the coast of southern British Columbia.
A senior government source said Wednesday that promised legislation meant to fast-track the review and approval of major projects like ports, pipelines, power plants and more will preserve the powers of the federal Species At Risk Act.
