In its efforts to enhance green cover, the Avadi Municipal Corporation is developing 12 new parks across Avadi. The projects also include creating sponge parks and parks around water bodies, which are aimed at improving rainwater recharge and helping mitigate inundation during monsoon.The initiative is also expected to create additional green and recreational spaces in every neighbourhood. Avadi Corporation officials said each project was designed based on the specific needs of a locality. Work is in progress to develop the parks at a cost of ₹9.69 crore.Restoration of Arafath Lake, along with a park at Thirumullavoyal, is one of the major ongoing projects. Besides works to deepen the lake for increased storage capacity, bund protection works are being carried out to prevent breaches. The ₹2.99 crore project would include a park and facilities like a children’s play area, a food court, and an open-air theatre.Residents of Thirumullaivoyal, however, said sewage pollution into major water bodies must be stopped for comprehensive restoration.Avadi Corporation Commissioner R. Saranya said developing parks around five water bodies would serve as flood-control assets, groundwater recharge structures, and community spaces for people of different age groups. Efforts are under way to protect water bodies from misuse.Avadi residents said the parks would provide more public spaces for recreation and community activities. Selvakani. T., a resident of Balaji Nagar, Avadi, said more open sites must be identified to expand green cover. The projects would also aid groundwater recharge and prevent encroachments.Officials said most of the 48 parks have been repaired and improved with better amenities. While sports courts are being provided in areas where youngsters lack playgrounds, fitness equipment will be added for residents seeking spaces for exercise, as well as rainwater storage facilities in areas prone to flooding.For instance, Nethaji Nagar Park would be developed with a sports complex. Similarly, open sites in places like Jak Nagar and the TNHB area have been taken up for park development. Sponge parks at Kanakkankuttai, Thirumullaivoyal, and Sri Ram Nagar would help reduce waterlogging.
