Binance reclaimed its throne atop the exchange leaderboard in August, posting up to $243B in spot trading volume as the broader crypto market shook off a summer slump. Total spot volume across 14 major centralized exchanges hit $510.4B for the month, a 19% jump from July’s depressed levels.
That July figure, for context, was ugly. Spot volume had cratered 21.7% to roughly $429B across the same set of exchanges, marking one of the weakest months in recent memory.
Bitcoin did the heavy lifting
The catalyst was hard to miss. Bitcoin’s price surged more than 30% during August, creating exactly the kind of volatility that gets traders reaching for their keyboards. Mid-month daily trading peaks approached $37B.
Binance alone reported record inflows exceeding $15.7B during the month. Trading activity was heavily concentrated in major cryptocurrencies, with Bitcoin dominating the volume breakdown. No specific altcoins were singled out as significant contributors to the surge.
