GraphicAnalysis: How Ningxia is building oases in the desert

Editor’s Note: In parts of Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, sand and wind have long been the backdrop of daily life. In some remote areas, the desolate land cannot sustain even life itself. What did Ningxia do? It relocated 1.23 million people from unlivable regions. Yet the story did not end with the resettlement. In places such as Hongsibu, the new land was also wasteland, and the migrants had to build their lives from the ground up, inch by inch. These graphics tell their story of remarkable grit and determination – not only in creating a livable homeland, but also in forging a brighter future.
