Image: Markku Ulander / LehtikuvaSTT17:05Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen (NCP) said on Wednesday she would stand behind a joint statement condemning Israeli settlements, even if she were the only one doing so.The statement also aims to restrict imports of products from Israeli settlements. According to Valtonen, the aim is to prevent Israel from continuing to build settlements in the West Bank and thereby help safeguard the prospects for a two-state solution."If it's a question of respecting international law, I'm prepared to stand alone on this," Valtonen said at Parliament on Wednesday.Finland's participation in the joint statement with several other European countries has drawn criticism from the Finns Party and the Christian Democrats.Speaking at a press conference in Parliament, Valtonen said she is not alone in the government on the issue.Earlier on Wednesday, Jani Mäkelä, chair of the Finns Party parliamentary group, said on X that Valtonen had acted on her own and that the government did not share a common position on the matter.On Tuesday, Finland said it would begin restricting imports from Israeli settlements alongside the Nordic countries, Canada, the UK and France. Valtonen said the volume of such imports is small, though products including cosmetics are imported from the settlements, according to Finnwatch.
