A nonprofit has sued Amazon in a proposed class-action, alleging the US’ second-largest private employer has systematically discriminated against pregnant employees, including firing some, in violation of labour statutes.
The complaint, led by four former warehouse employees, alleges Amazon frequently violates federal and New York state law by denying pregnant workers basic accommodations such as chairs, bathroom and water breaks, and time off for prenatal appointments.
A Better Balance, the nonprofit that filed the claim in Brooklyn federal court on Tuesday, claims Amazon’s discriminatory and retaliatory policies have been documented for years, including in Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaints.
