Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy sent a letter to Ford $F Motor Company CEO Jim Farley on Tuesday urging the automaker to sever ties with two Chinese companies, citing national security concerns over Ford's deepening reliance on Chinese technology and manufacturing.
Duffy's letter identified three specific concerns: Ford's use of licensed battery technology from Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) at its BlueOval Battery Park in Marshall, Michigan — a company that appears on the Department of War's list of banned companies — a new partnership with Chinese automaker Geely Auto to jointly manufacture low- and zero-emission vehicles at Ford's factory in Valencia, Spain, and Ford's decision to delay moving production of some Lincoln models from China to the United States until 2030.
