Britain’s top law enforcement body for serious crime just made it official: crypto is now one of its biggest headaches. The National Crime Agency, working alongside the Financial Conduct Authority, released a set of nine economic crime system priorities in July 2025, and cryptoassets landed in the bronze medal position at number three.

Only professional enablers (think corrupt lawyers and accountants) and politically exposed persons ranked higher on the threat list.

What the NCA actually said

The NCA’s 2026 National Strategic Assessment of Serious and Organised Crime flagged what it called the “innovative” use of crypto products by criminals for evasion and large-scale movement of illicit value.

Perhaps more significant than the ranking itself is the NCA’s stated ambition to generate its own targets. The agency wants to build intelligence-driven capabilities that let it proactively identify crypto crime rather than depending on referrals from exchanges, blockchain analytics firms, or other external sources.
