Experts said some of the spyware was sold only to governments and cost millions of euros
Serbian activists and opposition figures on Wednesday said their phones had been infected with advanced spyware ahead of an expected snap poll sought by protesters denouncing state corruption.
At least 14 people connected to the movement, led mainly by students and ongoing for nearly two years, had been targeted, digital rights group SHARE Foundation said, confirming the hack.
Serbia has been rocked by protests over a railway station roof collapse that killed 16 people in November 2024, which have drawn the largest crowds since the fall of strongman Slobodan Milosevic in 2000.
The tragedy became a symbol of entrenched corruption, with demands for a transparent investigation evolving into calls for President Aleksandar Vucic to hold early elections.
