French president urges EU-wide social media ban for under-15s ahead of SOTEU
French President Emmanuel Macron wants the European Commission to propose an EU-wide social media ban for children who are younger than 15-year-olds, according to a letter obtained by Euractiv.
The letter, addressed to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and first reported by AFP, has pressed for new European rules to ban access to social media “to protect all children in the Union”.
Macron’s intervention comes ahead of the annual State of the Union speech, which von der Leyen will give on 16 September. She’s widely expected to use the high-profile platform to set out a plan for EU-wide rules to curb children’s access to social media, as Euractiv reported previously.
