TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government aims to produce 100,000 national electric motorcycles per year. Setia Diarta, the Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industry at the Ministry of Industry, stated that this production capacity has been established through cooperation and requires a total investment of Rp2.6 trillion. The government has assigned this project to PT LEN Industri (Persero)."So, there is a manufacturing process carried out here, and several industries are involved," said Setia during a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) VII Commission on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.Regarding the domestic component level (TKDN), Setia explained that the electric motorcycle project refers to the predetermined TKDN roadmap. As of 2026, the domestic component level of battery-powered electric vehicles must reach a minimum of 40 percent. This percentage is set to increase to 60 percent in 2027-2029, and further rise to a minimum of 80 percent in 2030.According to Setia, TKDN directs investment in the electric vehicle industry does not prevent Indonesia from remaining a market subject, but rather, it allows the country to become a producer. Therefore, the TKDN target is to increase local content and promote battery downstreaming in Indonesia."This will be an added value for the domestic industry," he said.On July 17, 2026, Prabowo announced the plan to launch the national electric motorcycle project. Four days later, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi explained that the national electric motorcycle project is not only about production capability but also a part of efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuel-based oil. He also mentioned that the electric motorcycles in the project are domestically made.According to the Head of Development and Research Division of the Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industry Association, Prabowo Kartoleksono, an electric motorcycle can be considered a national electric motorcycle if it truly adds value to Indonesia. This means the product should be viewed not only from a branding perspective, but also from the standpoint of the entire production process, investment, industrial development, and the involvement of national business players. The product should also meet TKDN and involve the domestic supply chain."In addition, it must be able to create jobs, drive investment, improve national manufacturing capability, and strengthen the Indonesian electric motorcycle ecosystem," said Prabowo to Tempo on Thursday, July 23, 2026.Read: Rp703 Billion in Government Aid Sent to Rebuild Homes in SumatraClick here to get the latest news updates from Tempo on Google News
