According to SOKAPU, attempts to silence discussions about the past would not promote reconciliation or lasting peace in Kaduna State.
The Southern Kaduna Peoples’ United Associations (SOKAPU) has expressed concern over ongoing criticisms, veiled blackmail and recent threats issued by members of the family and associates of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, against the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.).
SOKAPU said the threats, including a seven-day ultimatum issued to retired General Musa over his remarks concerning the governance and security situation in Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023, were an attempt to intimidate a public official who had spoken about issues affecting the state.
In a statement signed by its National President, Engr. Tabara Samuel Kato, the group said retired General Musa’s comments during an appearance on Channels Television reflected the experiences of residents of Southern Kaduna, who, according to the association, suffered intense insecurity, displacement and what it described as divisive policies during the former governor’s tenure.
SOKAPU argued that demanding a retraction of comments concerning the period or threatening legal action over such accounts amounted to an attempt to suppress public discussion and downplay accountability for events that occurred during the former governor’s administration.
