Lithuanian intelligence currently sees no increased threat from Belarus, Deividas Matulionis, President Gitanas Nausėda’s chief national security adviser, said Thursday.
“I specifically made additional inquiries today, and our services have no such information. As of today, we do not see an increased threat from the Belarusian side,” Matulionis told LRT RADIO.
He said that while Russian military installations are present in Belarus, Lithuanian intelligence has not detected new manoeuvre units that would pose a direct threat to Lithuania, Latvia or Poland.
Matulionis’ comments followed warnings by Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who was visiting Lithuania and said she had received information about new military infrastructure being built in Belarus, including near the border with Ukraine and along its borders with European Union countries.
Matulionis said Lithuanian intelligence was closely monitoring developments in Belarus. A significant buildup of Russian troops would be a clear signal requiring action at both the national and NATO levels, he said.
